Mars Orbiter Mission trajectory correction manoeuvre on June 11
HYDERABAD: The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) will perform another planned trajectory correction manoeuvre to ensure a precise rendezvous with Mars. This will take place on June 11, 2014 at 4.30 pm for 16 seconds.
The Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) manoeuvre will be performed on September 24, 2014, ISRO has said.
MOM traveled more than 460 million km distance in its 680 million km
elliptical trajectory around Sun.As of June 9,, it was at a distance of
about 100 million km from planet Earth. The two way radio communication
delay is approximately 11 minutes.
It may be mentioned here that
on April 09, 2014 at 9.50 am IST, MOM crossed the half-way mark of its
journey to the Red Planet along the designated helio-centric trajectory.
Mars Orbiter Spacecraft was launched onboard PSLV-C25 on November 05,
2013. On December 01, 2013, Trans Mars Injection manoeuvre was conducted
successfully and the Spacecraft was set in its course towards Planet
Mars through a helio-centric trajectory. Soon after the Spacecraft
crossed the sphere of influence of Earth, a Trajectory Correction
Manoeuvre (TCM) was performed successfully on December 11, 2013.
ISRO has been continuously monitoring the Spacecraft using its Deep Space Network complemented by that of NASA-JPL. As the Spacecraft is on its designated trajectory, the TCM planned for April 2014 is not considered essential.

ISRO had announced earlier that if
required, the next TCM was planned to be carried out in June 2014.Now
that scientists have felt it is necessary to go ahead with the
trajectory correction manoeuvre on June 11.
